Preston Garvey will instantly hate the player after establishing the first raider outpost, even if his affinity has already been maxed and the United We Stand perk unlocked. This is understandable given that the goals of the Nuka-World gangs are directly opposed to the Minutemen's settlement-related activities.

1. The perk, United we stand, says; The player character's Damage Resistance is increased by 20 points and the player character deals +20% damage when outnumbered. Does this mean the Damage Resistance is permantly +20, or also only when outnumbered?
2. Fighting Raider groups, Super Mutant groups, swarms of bugs, institute synths. So many enemies factions sends half a dozen or more enemies after you at once. Preston's United We Stand perk is quite useful in those circumstances and Preston himself is pretty easy to max out affinity for. It's a perk I think everybody should invest in early on.

Thanks to your relationship with Preston, you deal +20 percent more damage and gain +20 Damage Resistance when facing three or more opponents.

For most of the game, the Tilde “~” is the standard way to open up the in-game console. Bethesda has done no different, simply press the tilde which is just beside the “1” on your keyboard.
